Did Fiaz Really Call Sadiq a Liar?
There appears to be something of a spat between Newham’s two mayors. Sadiq Khan is now in Canning Town on the western edge of the Royal Docks and only a stone’s throw from the proposed exit to the new Silvertown Tunnel. The tunnel will be the first new ROAD crossing of the Thames in London for half a century.
It is a proposal which has attracted the hostility of the Greens and parts of Labour’s lefty fringe. This ‘fringe’ apparently includes the other mayor in Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz. In an article in My London she appears to accuse Khan of lying.
Relations between the Labour siblings are rumoured to be tense. We cannot see this improving things.
When asked why Fiaz would risk a further deterioration in relations with the Mayor of London, Labour insiders suggest that her target audience isn’t Canning Town, nor Newham as a whole, nor even Sadiq Khan. The bubbling rumour mill suggests that her target is the selectorate of Stratford and West Ham Labour Party.
Although she hasn’t announced her candidacy yet, it is suggested that she is ready to throw her hat into the ring for the new parliamentary seat of Stratford and Bow and is intent on burnishing her lefty credentials amongst Labour’s middle class Corbynites in the north of the borough.
This will put her on a collision course with sacked councillor, Terry Paul who represents Stratford and is known to be seeking the seat and probably another Stratford councillor, Josh Garfield who is no less desperate for a place on the green benches at Westminster.
In the event that Labour chooses to impose a candidate, Fiaz already seems to have the support of Deputy Leader Angela Raynor.
