A New Red-Green Alliance in the Making?

Having scaled the political heights and becoming the unexpected leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn discovered how slippery the greasy pole was. Not only did he lose his position as leader, but he found himself without the whip of the party he had been leading, only months before.

Then to add insult to injury, he discovered that he would not be allowed to stand in the next general election as a Labour candidate.

All is not lost. It seems that there are some in the Green Party who would welcome him.

Imagine Corbyn standing as a Green in Islington North in 2025. Could this give the Greens their first parliamentary success after Brighton?

In 2022, Labour retained the council in Islington quite comfortably.

But if we look at the results for just the constituency of Islington North, as compiled by Stats for Lefties, we see that Labour could come under some pressure. Imagine if Corbyn threw in his lot with the Greens. How many of the Islington voters would follow him? Would the handful of TUSC voters and communists throw in their lot, and more importantly, their activists behind Corbyn? If 12% switched, a Red/Green Alliance could return Corbyn and topple Labour in Islington North. That’s not a small “if”, but it is also not impossible.
