Is the Labour Group Going Broke?
It may or may not be known to readers, but the ruling Labour Group collects subs from its members. These are not insignificant sums and are drawn down as a percentage of the councillors’ incomes from their work on the council.
From this, they pay for a ‘party organiser’. His job is not to arrange the Christmas fraternal, though he may be called upon to do something similar. His main role is to organise the campaigning on behalf of the Labour councillors across the borough, to ensure that every household is visited between elections, at least once.
In this way Labour can out-campaign any of the opposition parties.
The other major item that the subs go towards is to pay the subs, that Labour councillors have to pay to the Labour Party.
Alas, it seems that this hasn’t been done. Officially, it’s down to a banking mishap, a mishap that non-one seems to have noticed for five years.
We are told that the Labour Group has some £21,000 in the bank. This is a significant sum. Unfortunately, the Labour Party has sent them a bill for £27,000 of unpaid subs.
This is embarrassing. These are the people who are in charge of the council’s budget!
We look forward to seeing how they deal with this. It might be time for the local organiser to start looking for other employment.
