The Fiaz Index

A reader suggested that we compile an index to assist readers interested in the career of Newham Mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz. We have put together a short index that will take readers to some of the highlights.

Electoral Trends in Fiaz’s Newham

Having hand-picked council candidates in two elections, Mayor Fiaz should have been confident in a ‘stellar team’ (her words). What we got was a first administration mired in antisemitism. But surely, she would do better in her second term. Alas not. Before the polls had opened, Labour had suspended one of her favoured candidates who expressed support for the opinion that the Jews were on a campaign to take over the world, and, basically, err, Hitler was right.

Roxi and the Islamists

Following her election in 2018, Fiaz ditched one group of Muslims in East Ham. They had done their job in the campaign and helped to get out the vote. Now they were redundant. This did not mean that she had given up on Tower Hamlets style community politics and she has since formed some unsavoury connections with MEND and Tablighi Jamaat.

Allegations of Bullying

Broken Promises

Mayor Fiaz almost gets a by on this one, almost. Although politicians are expected to break their promises, she seems to have taken it to a new level.

All of these relate to the same building which was originally built as a ‘foyer’ to house local young people who were undergoing some form of employment related training. It has since become used as temporary housing for families. Prior to becoming mayor, Ms Fiaz was vociferous in their support. At the 2022 AGN she asserted that all of the families would be moved into new accommodation. By the 2023 AGM she said, ‘no, they won’t’.
