What is the Difference between these two Men?
Well, here’s one. Desai is an elected member of the London Assembly, Godfrey is an elected member of Newham Council.
In the past year, both have been the subject of allegations of criminal behaviour. (Desai, Godfrey)
Both were arrested and questioned by the police.
Following the interviews, Desai was told that the matter was at an end and no charges were preferred. This took about 48 hours. Godfrey, it seems, was bailed to a date in the future and we understand that a crown court trial is pending.
This is where it seems to get a little odd.
We know that Desai was suspended from the Labour Party because the Labour Party publicly removed the whip from him on the London Assembly. He remains suspended months after the allegations were dismissed by the police. Our sources inside the Labour Party tell us that the party refuses to lift the suspension, “because they are still investigating”. This sounds suspiciously like a fishing trip in which they are seeking to drag up any allegation that will justify his continued suspension. It doesn’t tell us why.
If we are correct in our assertion that Godfrey is facing a crown court trial, (and we believe that we are), it is therefore somewhat surprising to see that half a year after his arrest and police interview and being bailed, he remains listed as a “Labour and Co-operative” member of the council.
We are interested to know why two men are treated so very differently, and why the one who has had all charges dropped is the one who is suspended?
We struggle to think what they might be. Petty personality differences? A desire to exclude him from the Newham mayoral candidacy? Has he offended Starmer or maybe someone closer to home? The one that no-one is talking about, but which is beginning to gain currency is that Desai is Asian and Godfrey is White.
The Labour Party has it within its power to clarify the matter. Let’s hope that they do so quickly.
