Newham’s Poor Performance Attracts ‘Ambulance Chasing’ Lawyers.
We recently cited an ombudsman’s report which showed the London Borough of Newham in a very poor light with regard to its housing maintenance and repairs service. Twice they have been cited for severe maladministration.
You will recall that Newham accounts for a quarter of all of the adverse findings conducted under the criteria created in 2019. Clearly, Newham is ahead of the country in something.
Well it seems that we were not the only ones who noticed.
A firm called Nuovo Law, trading as Tenants’ Advice seems to have noticed a business opportunity here. They have begun delivering leaflets to tenants in Newham asking if they suffer from a number of housing and repairs issues.
This ‘FREE’ service to Newham tenants will come at the expense of Newham council tax payers. Problems that will cost tens of pounds to fix will cost Newham hundreds and often thousands of pounds because of admin and legal costs loaded on top.
Its time for Newham Council to get its house (or its houses and flats!) in order. Sort out the maintenance problems and give your tenants a decent service. In the long run it will be cheaper for you and better for your tenants.
If Councillor Shaban Mohammed would like to share his action plan for sorting out the repairs and maintenance service, we’ll be happy to publish it. (If of course he has an action plan and he is not simply twiddling his thumbs and counting his hefty allowances.)
It shouldn’t be too difficult. Cllr Mohammed is a long-standing private landlord and owner of a multi-million-pound property portfolio, so he has some experience in managing rented properties. How about transferring some of that experience into the public sector?
All that we ask is that tenants get a decent service.
