Labour Mayors and Ex-Mayors and Wannabe Mayors
The Labour Party seems to have got its knickers in a twist with regard to municipal mayors.
The WILL-SHE/WON’T SHE Mayor of Newham has now committed to a referendum on the mayoralty in May when Newham voters will be invited to vote ‘YES’ to Khan as Mayor of London and at the same time to vote to abolish the mayor in Newham.
But Newham’s troubles are as nothing compared to those in Liverpool.
The unfortunate city lost its mayor when Joe Anderson was forced to stand down having been arrested over allegations of corrupt property dealing. Whoops!!
Having decided not to abolish the position, they did try, but for reasons best known to itself Labour has removed three candidates from the running, all women incidentally. This has left two candidates remaining, both young and widely reported as lacking experience; one black and female, a Corbynite and one white and male, a right-winger.
Where it is similar to Newham is that in both cases, Newham and Liverpool, Labour is the dominant party and in both cases, the local Labour Party is more interested in political game-playing than improving the lives of their residents.
Oh, by the way. The Labour Party is being taken to court by one of the ousted Liverpool candidates. Happily, nothing like that would happen in Newham.
