Correction:

We are happy to amend the article on selection fraud . Mr Mirza, who may yet turn out to be the outsider who upsets Labour’s apple cart, has been in touch to request that we note the following, which corrects a misstatement in the article. We are happy to do so.

Dear Editor,

I think you need to amend your article because I was not in charge of people signing. It was Tahmina Rahman who was the secretary of Plaistow North Branch at the time. It’s true that I was called by London region. Cllr Alan Griffiths was the CLP secretary who accompanied me as a silent friend. I was asked about the impersonation of Mufti Umair who used someone else’s name to get in the meeting. I was questioned if I knew him. I assured them that I never knew or saw him before the meeting. l understand that Anas Khan and Newham people Alliance were behind the impersonation.

Mufti Umair and Anas Khan are leading figures in the Tablighi Jamaat group, at least in the younger more activist wing of the group. They were key figures in the campaign to mobilise the predominantly Muslim vote inside the Labour Party, to ensure the selection of Rokhsana Fiaz as labour candidate for mayor in 2018. And they are behind the Newham Muslim Forum which has the monopoly on contacts between the council and the Muslim community in Newham.
