Even Curiouser
We reflected on the rumour that Cllr Lewis Godfrey was suspended from the Labour Party. This seemed to be a bit odd, as he had only just been cleared of wrongdoing by the standards committee.
Our information is that Godfrey did not attend the last meeting of the Labour Group. This is to be expected if he was suspended but his lack of attendance is not of itself conclusive. Those who have attempted to contact him via his council email address have received a message back stating that he is on temporary sick leave.
This may be a factual statement, but it begs the question as to whether this ‘illness’ is of the diplomatic kind.
He remains a “Labour and Co-operative Party” member on the council website. Unlike the previously suspended and expelled Labour councillor for Canning Town South, who now sits as an independent (nothing to do with Newham Independents).
Yet again, we are led to conclude that there is a lack of transparency and openness in respect of Cllr Godfrey. Has he been suspended from the Labour Party, or the Council? And if so, what for?
A select few may know the truth, but it is clear that neither the mayor nor the chief whip have been candid with their colleagues in Labour Group. This is of itself surprising, because, as we noted, the political vultures are already circling in Green St West in anticipation of Godfrey’s deselection.
Somebody knows something!
Godfrey is known as a supporter of the mayor, so whose blushes are they seeking to spare.
