What is Going On? Newham in the Courts.

We continue to dig into the story about Cllr Lewis Godfrey’s suspension from the Labour Party. We are confident in this assertion, although, he still appears on the council website (Nov 8th 2024) as a Labour Party and Co-operative Party member.

We speculated that his suspension was due to an issue dealt with by the Standards Committee, and opined that it seemed unusual that he would be cleared by the local committee responsible for oversight of the behaviour of councillors and then suspended by the national Labour Party.

It suggested that there was more to this than was being shared.

We have recently been told that Cllr Godfrey has been bailed by the police. Although the nature of the offence for which the police wanted to chat to him is not yet public, it seems that it is serious enough that the Labour Party want to distance themselves from him as far as possible.

More on this as we receive it.

If that is not enough, we learn that the mayor, yep, one Rokhsana Fiaz (coincidentally another Labour and Co-op member), is taking Newham Borough Council to court alleging that she is the victim of racism. 

If this is correct, it seems bizarre in the extreme. The boss of Newham Council is taking the organization she runs to a tribunal because the organization she runs discriminated against her. We are told that the issue at hand was the decision to challenge her (alleged) bullying.

As soon as we know more, we will be able to share more on this frankly astonishing story.
