Independents Announce Candidate for West Ham and Beckton

The Independent Group have selected Councillor Sophia Naqvi, as their candidate for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Rishi Sunak has yet to announce the date of the general election and Labour have yet to announce their candidates for the West Ham and Beckton and Stratford and Bow seats. Moreover, the process by which candidates will be selected remains opaque.

The suggestion that local Labour Party members might be involved in the choice of a candidate seems increasingly unlikely, which means that candidates will be imposed by the NEC. It’s almost as if the Labour Party doesn’t trust its local members.

It is presently unclear whether the Independent Group will align itself to one of the national campaigns. Their X/Twitter pages are currently dominated by the events in Gaza and both the Workers Party and The Muslim Vote organization have their posts repeated on the Independent Group pages. So, it seems that events in the Eastern Mediterranean are going to influence more than just the US presidential election.
