Uma Kumaran has been out and about, supported by the mayor and a handful of councillors.

Newham Independents have chosen their council candidate for Maryland. Linda Jordon is a candidate from the Left. Formerly a Labour councillor, she was primarily responsible for introduction of inclusive education, which saw disabled children increasingly taught alongside their able-bodied peers in mainstream schools. She has continued her interests in education and for many years was the Chair of Governors at Eastlea School and an advocate for NewVIC.

She is the first Independent Group candidate who is not a Muslim.
