Lessons for Newham?
Just what is Cllr Griffiths suggesting here? The past few years have seen the rainbow coalition in Newham Labour strain, as the two constituency parties were pulled apart on communitarian and identity grounds. Specifically, the Black and African members felt marginalised and excluded by the newly dominant Asian group in East and West Ham and specifically the Muslim members. We have recounted elsewhere Newham’s only Jewish councillor was subject to abuse from religious and atheist anti-Semites.
It cannot be, but it does sound like Cllr Griffiths is urging a coalition between Black and Jewish members to counter the current Muslim dominance in Newham Labour.
