We have previously noted Labour’s attempt to smear the Tories over high taxes, (here). Well, it’s just politics and no-one should need to feel sorry for the Tories.

But somewhere, someone must be feeling just a little embarrassed when Newham’s Mayor Fiaz and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, hike their council taxes by almost 15% in one year, (see here).

Is this, we ask, sound financial planning or an opportunistic attempt to boost the vote? And, hasn’t the windfall tax already been spent?

But not to worry, it seems that Labour’s pledge to freeze council tax, even just for one year is not a pledge at all. The Sun reported, “LABOUR was today embarrassingly forced to admit that its flagship pledge to freeze council tax won't actually help anyone - or even happen”.

This all gave us pause to consider what a future Newham Conservative election leaflet might look like.

We should perhaps have added that Mayor Khan has managed to increase the London supplement, charged to council tax payers, by 57% since he came into office in 2016. But as we can all see, that is ok because London’s services, the Met Police, Fire Service, transport etc have all improved immeasurably, haven’t they?
