The Great Debate. What Happened Behind the Scenes?
More news is leaking out about the decision to amend the Green motion on Gaza, rather than to simply oppose it, which is what the standing Labour practice would have been.
It seems that Cllr Garfield urged the Labour Group leaders, not to depart from their policy and practice. In addition, he is reported to have said, that he had been on the phone with a London Regional officer who was categorical. Labour should oppose, not amend the motion.
It appears that Cllr James Asser, who was ‘attending’ remotely, stated that he was now the Chair of the NEC and he would “sort it out”.
It must be nice for the mayor, who is said to have been privately very critical of the party’s position on Palestine and even more so of Starmer personally, to have friends in high places.
